Emissions explained

Scope 1

Produced directly by an organisation's activities, facilities or operations. Examples include emissions from on-site fuel combustion in boilers, furnaces, vehicles, and any other equipment owned or controlled by the organisation.

Scope 2

Bought in through an energy supplier. These emissions are indirectly generated off-site from the energy sources used to power a business' operations. They are associated with the generation of electricity, heat or steam purchased and consumed by the organisation.

Scope 3

All other emissions in a business' supply chain, both incoming and outgoing. They are often the most extensive and challenging to measure because they include a wide range of activities, such as supply chain, employee commuting, business travel and product lifecycle emissions.

Easy ways to reduce your emissions (and save money!)

Scope 1

Consider decreasing transportation miles for your company’s fleets, switch to energy efficient machinery and refrigeration, shift to electric equipment/vehicles and explore alternative heating for your buildings.

Scope 2

You can focus on energy-efficient upgrades and discuss renewable energy options with your building owner.

Scope 3

Our reporting details the amount of CO2e you are buying in from your top suppliers (& categories). This data enables you to spot opportunities to switch to suppliers that are also trying to reduce their carbon emissions.

Why it is important to choose the right CO2e data provider

A recent study by scholars, including Omnevue Co-founder Dr Marc Lepere, at King’s Business School, London identified that ‘there is uncertainty amongst businesses in the application of the GHG Protocol’. It also found that ‘a gap in the GHG Protocol may be facilitating gaming in the accounting of GHG emissions’.
